Tirsvad Holstein is a breeding program formed in the 1990s after intensive embryo imports from the USA. We are still selecting genetics from all around the world. Our holstein nucleus-herd is located in Tirsvad, Denmark. We provide high quality embryos, semen and live cattle both to private customers and AI-stations worldwide.
Tirsvad Wagyu is a breeding program by Tirsvad Genetics. We provide Wagyu Genetics to customers around the world. We are running our own donor station including embryo flushing facilities and Ovum Pick Up / IVF setups. We have our own AI-bulls with semen available. Tirsvad started Wagyu breeding in 2008 after several embryo-imports from the USA.

Since the start of Tirsvad Holsteins in 1994, the breeding goal for the Holstein breed has been constantly changing. Especially due to changed consumer requirements and consumption patterns. In the 1990s, the focus were on exterior, protein and cow families.
From around 2000, the focus changed more towards fitness, disease resistance, fertility and longevity. From 2023 the breeding goals are extended towards feed efficiency, methane emission and animal welfare.
Tirsvad Holsteins also tries to implement important monogenic traits in the breeding program such as the polled gene, betacasein A2A2 and kappacasein BB.
Holstein cattle breeding stands strong for the upcoming challenges.

Wagyu is a Japanese beef breed, which has several characteristics that are different from other beef breeds. The meat is also known as “Kobe Beef” The word “Wagyu” means Japanese cow. From its origin in Japan the breed was used as working animals in the rice fields.
The farmers were always aware of the extraordinary power of the Wagyu animals.
With that inherited physical supremacy the farmers had a unique breed in the field. The meat was not consumed by the Japanese people because of buddishes rules at that time.
From the beginning of 1900 the Wagyu cattle were again allowed to be slaughtered and eaten. Right away a very special meat quality was discovered in the Wagyu breed.
The most important characteristics are tenderness, marbling, healthy fatty acids, lower melting point of the fat and general juicy tasty meat. The breeding of wagyu has during the last decade become very professional using modern genetic DNA tools to generate the genetic progress.
A lot of different myths about the Wagyu breed have been told. Some of them are nice story telling like feeding with beer, massage and classic music. Nevertheless the well known Kobebeef was produced by feeding the Wagyu cattle with waste products from local breweries. And originally the cattle had muscle and skin massage after long working days in the rice fields. The classic music story is not very certain, unless it was pleasure for the humans.
During the last years Wagyu beef has been very popular around the world.
